What is a Bleed?

Bleed is the most important part of any printing project as it is the difference between your print project looking professional, or like something you rushed to print out at home. Bleed is the part of your printing project which goes beyond the borders of the actual finished product.

Bleed allows your printing project to look professional and classy because it is printed all the way to the edge of the paper, rather than having that annoying white border around the edges which gives away straight away, the fact that you have scrimped on your printing budget.

The bleed used in the printing process also allows printers to overcome any movement or inconsistencies with the paper or their printing as the edge of the paper is cut after the project has printed, so it is dead straight every time and on every copy.

In the UK, we use the same bleed margin as the US; 1/8 of an inch, or three millimetres, of extra printing is done around the edge of a project and cut off for the perfect finish. In Europe bleeds are often wider, up to five millimetres, depending on the printer and the printing company.

The bleed width can also change depending on the type of project being printed. For example, unique, one off die cut printing jobs often require a ¼ of an inch, or as much as six millimetres because there is more chance of the paper moving during the delicate die cut procedure.

Bleed is like many things in life, when it is done correctly, you don’t even know it has been done, but as soon as it is done wrong, everyone can tell. Therefore, this is why it is so important for designers and printers to work closely together, and to choose a printer with designers in employ, or design experience, so your printing job turns out perfectly.
