A Guide to Paper Size in the UK...
Before you confirm your printing order and agree to the sizes for your paper, compliments slips and flyers make sure the sizes you are thinking of are the sizes you will actually be getting.
In the UK, our printers use the same paper sizes and standards as Europe, that is, the ISO Standard sizing. You will therefore have probably heard of the common ‘A’ sizes, for example A4 is your standard sheet of office paper. The A series actually starts at zero and goes right down to A6, so here are the sizes you may need to ask for when organising your next printing project:
- A0 = 841 mm x 1189 mm
- A1 = 594 mm x 841 mm
- A2 = 420 mm x 594 mm
- A3 = 297 mm x 420 mm
- A4 = 210 mm x 297 mm
- A5 = 148 mm x 210 mm
- A6 = 105 mm x 148 mm
As you will also see from the UK paper sizes above, the higher the number, the smaller the paper so make sure you know which A you need. Other paper sizes are also derived from the A paper sizes, for example, a third of A4 is a popular size for compliments slips and business envelopes and is known as DL.
Many of the standard A paper sizes have corresponding envelope sizes, or sizes which will fit if they are folded in half or thirds so make sure you think about how you will be distributing your printed project and whether it will fold easily.
For example, a C4 envelope will easily accommodate an A4 piece of paper without having to fold it. However, to post out an A3 or A2 printed document you may need to fold it once of twice to fit it in a C4 envelope.
Also remember that the A sizes are standard sizes and if your document does not print easily, or evenly onto one of these sizes, you will still have to pay for the paper which is cut off and not used. Therefore, try to make your printed documents a size where several can be printed on one piece of an A sized paper.
